The families we serve
Making Headway Foundation's Annual Yacht Cruise around NYC for patient families.

Our Foundation is looking for a volunteer who is proficient at Microsoft Access 2010 who can help us create a database of patient families that we assist. Much of the design decisions have been made. We are looking for help in building it, and creating the reports we need. If possible, also take the data from existing lists and entering this information into the new database. Great for a college student or recent grad who knows Access. Making Headway Foundation provides care and comfort for children with brain and spinal cord tumors while funding medical research geared toward better treatments and a cure. We are located in Chappaqua, NY (northern Westchester County).

Mission Statement

To provide care, comfort and a cure to children with brain and spinal tumors through various programs offered in NY, NJ and CT while funding cutting edge scientific research toward better treatments and a cure.

Description

Making Headway Foundation was established in 1996 by a small group of parents--Maya and Edward Manley and Clint Greenbaum--whose own children had undergone treatment for brain tumors. They found that traditional hospital-based medical programs failed to provide essential humanistic services that enabled a child to reintegrate physically and emotionally with his or her family, school and peer groups. The founders of Making Headway wished to provide other families with what they had found wanting--even with the finest medical care. Making Headway was conceived as having three main components:

Support at the Hospital
A Partnership with NYU Langone Medical Center
Making Headway Foundation works closely with NYU and its Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Making Headway provides a child- and family-friendly environment for children diagnosed with brain and spinal cord tumors. Families coming for treatment are greeted with music, clowns, healthy snacks and fun activities developed by trained, professional therapists.

Ongoing Care. Making Headway provides an Ongoing Care Program for patients in NY, CT and NJ, so that families leaving the hospital have access to support groups, counseling, educational consulting, periodic bereavement groups and more.

Research and Cure. The founders and current Board of Making Headway Foundation feel strongly that part of the mission should focus not only on the care and comfort of children with brain and spinal cord tumors, but on research toward their cure. Therefore, the Foundation also funds scientific research.
