ORGANIZATION: EnCorps STEM Teachers Program

EnCorps Teacher

If you have ever considered becoming a math or science teacher, or if you are interested in helping middle or high school students with math and science, we would love for you to join our Corps of Educators!

EnCorps places STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) professionals and military veterans in local high needs schools and after school programs. Volunteering your time with EnCorps is an intrinsically rewarding experience, and it is a low pressure, highly supported way for you to explore whether a career in teaching is right for you! Becoming a teacher is a big decision; your experience with EnCorps will help you with that, and simultaneously give you a chance to share your passion for your discipline with the next generation.

The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program (www.encorps.org) is a nonprofit organization that helps support skilled STEM professionals and military veterans make a career transition into teaching in high needs middle and high schools. We are dedicated to increasing the number of science and math teachers throughout California, and currently support the Bay Area, Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego regions. Our mission is directed towards working with individuals who are interested in becoming full time teachers, but we are excited to work with people who want to simply explore teaching and education.

EnCorps provides unique opportunities for our Educators, including:

  • Tutoring placements, which enables you to work directly with students right away
  • Helping out and guest teaching in a real classroom, which enables you to see what teaching feels like firsthand before you enroll in a credential program
  • Assistance and guidance with selecting and applying to teaching credential programs
  • Support with the CSET exams -- these are subject specific tests that people must pass before they receive their teaching credential
  • Access to networks and schools as Educators seek full time employment as teachers
  • Ongoing professional development via our fall and spring institutes, and our summer boot camp

EnCorps is free to our Educators. However, you must apply to our program. In order to qualify,

  • you must be in STEM profession with at least 3 years of full-time STEM-related work experience,
  • you must be fully eligible to work in the United States,

Mission Statement

WE ARE STEM PROFESSIONALS PROVIDING HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION TO CLOSE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS FOR STUDENTS IN LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES

Description

Founded in 2007, EnCorps Inc. is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit with operations in California as well the greater Denver, Colorado and New York City areas. EnCorps connects highly effective STEM educators with public school students to counter the systemic injustice preventing children in under-resourced communities from accessing a high-quality STEM education. The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program(r) recruits, selects and supports STEM professionals and experts in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields as well as individuals who possess an advanced STEM degree to transition to teaching as an innovative, long-term solution to the STEM teacher shortage and to counter the alarming lack of math proficiency of middle and high school students nationwide. The EnCorps STEMx Tutors Program matches middle school students, currently under-performing in math, with volunteer STEM professionals, subject-matter experts and STEM college students to increase math skills and confidence prior to students entering high school.
