Saturday, February 20, 2016
Belle Isle Park, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Join the DNR and Belle Isle Conservancy for stewardship Saturdays. Our winter project will focus on cutting invasive shrubs, especially glossy and common buckthorn and honeysuckle, to restore the wet mesic flatwoods on the island. We will work in areas that are wet much of the year and (hopefully) have an easier time getting through them while things are frozen. Meet on Woodside Drive at the trailhead parking area just north of the canal bridge. From The Strand, pass the athletic fields and Vista Drive then turn left at the next road (there is a brick bathroom building at the corner). GPS coordinates: 42.340386, -82.968116

About Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation Division, Stewardship Unit

Location:

4631 Bishop Lake Rd, DNR Stewardship Field Office, Howell, MI 48843, US

Mission Statement

To preserve, protect and restore the natural and cultural resources present within Michigan State Parks for this and future generations.

Description

Volunteers will help steward natural areas (woodlands, wetlands, prairies, etc.) within Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These efforts will help protect entire ecosystems as well as individual species - especially those in greatest need of conservation ("Species of Special Concern" and those whose populations are "Threatened" or "Endangered").

Currently, Core Volunteer Stewards are volunteering at monthly volunteer workdays on weekends at 7 southeast Michigan parks and recreation areas. Volunteers do a variety of activities throughout the year including: removing invasive non-native plants, collecting seed from native plants, and planting native seedlings. Volunteers can also participate in a number of Individual Projects like Insect Monitoring, Photographic Monitoring and Invasive Plant Mapping - to name a few.

No previous experience is need to participate, though some training might be necessary for certain projects.
