Construct repurposed garden beds

ORGANIZATION: Growing Veterans

Growing Veterans

Growing Veterans and 21 Acres are putting on a workshop for the EPS Eagles by constructing raised garden beds. The materials come from a deconstructed fence. This is to demonstrate how materials can be re-purposed to creatively reuse them. This saves time, money, and natural resources.

We are looking for volunteers for an inter-generational project where you work alongside the Eagles. There will be about 15 Eagles, and they are between 15-17 years old. As a volunteer, you would be a team leader, help construct garden beds, and help keep the service on schedule. A tour of the LEED Platinum certified 21 Acres building will follow the service. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather, bring a lunch and water container. 21 Acres will provide training and materials.

The following is the itinerary:

9:30am -- arrive at 21 Acres

9:45am-11:45am -- garden bed workshop

12:00pm-12:30pm -- lunch

12:35-1:30pm -- tour 21 Acres

1:30-1:45pm -- reflections and depart 21 Acres

This project is ideal for people who are veterans, builders, gardeners, and community-minded.

About Growing Veterans

Location:

6458 Martin Place, Lynden, WA 98264, US

Mission Statement

To empower military veterans to grow food, communities, and each other.

We combine veteran reintegration with sustainable agriculture- creating a holistic solution to fighting the multitude of issues the veteran population faces and simultaneously empowering our fellow vets to strengthen the incredibly important sustainable agriculture movement.

Description

Besides being a place where vets can come to feel normal again, we try to harness the skills, energy and passions of military veterans to support and strengthen the sustainable agriculture movement. It’s no secret the subsidized food system is harmful to watersheds and all life that depends on them, creates bad tasting and nutrition lacking food, and is greatly reducing the diversity of crops that this planet has to offer. We believe that our nation’s military veterans are key to changing this system, literally from the ground up. By acting as positive leaders in the community, we have the potential to bridge all sides of the political/social/economic divide and strengthen the support of local and regional food systems that are sustainable for our environment, support local economies and increase the health and well being of our community members.
