Tutors help English language and adult basic education learners with English conversation, reading comprehension, writing and basic math. They also assist people who are preparing for the GED (high school equivalency) and U.S. Naturalization tests.
Successful tutors have strong English skills, basic math proficiency, considerable patience and flexibility. In addition, they enjoy interacting with adult learners from all walks of life.
Desired qualifications and skills include: completion of at least one year of college; a friendly demeanor and communication skills; fluency in written and spoken English; proficiency in basic math; a willingness to use a variety of methods to promote understanding with learners; and an ability to foster a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Tutors will be scheduled once a week for at least six months.
Adult Tutors are scheduled at the Central Library from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. or 4:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Monday or Wednesday. Contact Anne Vedella, Volunteer Services Coordinator, at volunteer@spl.org to request more information and a volunteer application. Thanks!
