Horizons was birthed in 1965 to serve system-involved youth of color at-risk of dropping out of high school and has since become a leader in serving this population. Current services tailored to meet their cultural, linguistic, socio-economic, educational, and re-entry needs include LifeWorks, ReSET Justice Collaborative (intensive case management), RoadMap to Peace (in-custody/substance use treatment, mental health, case management), Substance use early intervention, LevelUp (leadership), etc. Our approaches are trauma informed/healing centered, utilize indigenous practices of "circulos" and storytelling for validating youth’s narrative/experience, are rooted in liberatory practices where youth hold power and define/design/lead program systems and decision-making, and interrupt oppressive concepts of gender binary through respectful discussions, community agreements and norms of pronouns use.

Description

Creative Change Project is a new and dynamic after school program located within Thurgood Marshall High School in the Bay View District of San Francisco. Our program provides tutoring, creative expression groups (drumming, hip-hop, spoken word, and other artistic projects), counseling, and self esteem, vocational, recreational and skills building groups for at risk youth who live in the Bay View and Mission districts. We are seeking to empower the youth and help them find creative and positive alternatives to involvement in gangs, drugs and the juvenile justice system. We are looking for positive male and female role models who are interested in tutoring or assisting the youth with program-based projects. Although our primary need is for tutors, we are open to suggestions regarding other volunteer possibilities, as our program is creative, varied and somewhat flexible.
