Reading proficiency by third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and career success. Despite that, 67 percent of children nationwide, more than 80 percent of those from low-income families, are not proficient readers by the end of third grade. In our fall semester, 97.7% of our students showed improvement in basic reading skills, and the average improvement across sites was 74.5%.
Reading Corps volunteers are paired with students in pre-K through 2nd grade to engage them in basic reading and writing activities for an hour once or twice a week - a small but incredibly impactful commitment that makes a tremendous difference in the lives and development of children.
With sites across Arlington and a schedule that includes morning, afternoon, and evening meeting times, we're sure to have a site that fits your schedule.
