Family Volunteer Project to Help the Homeless in Rockland

ORGANIZATION: Volunteer New York!

  • 2 people are interested

For Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, join us at the Rockland County YMCA for this family-only project and service learning experience.
Volunteers will learn about homelessness and Midnight Run, a consortium of churches, synagogues, and other civic groups that distribute food, clothing, blankets, and personal care items to the homeless poor on the streets of New York City. A Dominican College Alumni Midnight Run team will share about their experiences and what goes into preparing for a run.

Volunteers will put together sock bundles (water bottle and piece of candy in a pair of socks), tie with ribbon and attach a homemade card. The DC Alumni team will distribute the sock bundles during their run the following week.

All materials for the sock bundles will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring travel size toiletries to support the DC Midnight Run team.

*This is a family-only project for youth 4 and over with an adult. To sign up, please choose Sign up with a team. Thanks!

Why families only? The goal of this project is not simply to package a large quantity of sock bundles, but to facilitate a dialogue between parents/grandparents and their children/grandchildren about homelessness in our community and empower them to take further action.
