St. Croix Hospice is currently looking for bedside Vigil Volunteers (also known as 11th Hour Volunteers) to assist in supporting patients and their families during the final 24 to 48 hours of a patient’s life. Visits occur where the patient calls home - memory care, nursing homes, or assisted living centers. Volunteers help in creating peaceful surroundings, sharing in silence, and handholding. Volunteers are active listeners in how they help family share stories about their love ones. Volunteers give gingerly by helping the family say good-bye to their loved one. A typical volunteer bedside vigil shift lasts about 4 to 6 hours and volunteers will rotate shifts, trading off at times agreed upon. This service will be provided as needed and volunteers will be on-call. Specialized training and ongoing support are provided by our Interdisciplinary Team of Physicians, nurses, socials workers and chaplains. Volunteers attend a training class as well as specialized training for the Vigil Volunteer Program.
