For The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, kids and their families are invited to Atria Rye Brook for an intergenerational project. Families and seniors will work together to create literacy aids that will be given to Head Start students.

Seniors benefit because they get to volunteer on behalf of young learners and visit with kids and their families. The families benefit because they can learn about and from the seniors while also making something that will help with retelling a story.

Did you know? By the end of Kindergarten, students need to be able to, with prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details, characters, setting and major events. Help Head Start students prepare for Kindergarten by creating tools that will bring a book alive for them.

Volunteers are needed to put together activity packets for Head Start students that will help them retelll a story. This literacy project does not involve working wiht students, but creating aids to help students.

This project is a part of MLK Day of Service.

*This is a family-friendly project for children 4 and over with an adult. If your child is under 8, we ask that your child volunteer by visiting with seniors, not in cutting out materials for the literacy aids.

If you are interested in signing up as a family, please choose Sign up with a team. Thanks!

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service brings together hundreds of volunteers in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam for service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions. Join us and make this a day on, not a day off. volunteernewyork.org/MLK
