While the rest of the country is snowed in, come down for some trail maintenance and fun in the sun this winter working in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness in the heart of the Ocala National Forest. Volunteers will use hand tools to cut away dead trees in burnt areas. The 10 miles of trail through the wilderness area are wild and remote (for Florida), and some workers will need to hike over four miles of trail before starting work. Much of the trail is through old burned areas with encroaching scrub oak that needs to be lopped. Most of the dead trees have already fallen, but there are still a few that must be removed with cross-cut saws. To register use website: https://www.americanhiking.org/events/ocala-national-forest/

Volunteer Vacations foster public land stewardship and provide volunteers the opportunity to give back to the trails they love, meet new people, and have a great time doing it!
Crews consist of 6-15 volunteers accompanied by a crew leader. Trips involve backpacking or day hiking and accommodations vary from primitive campsites to bunkhouses or cabins. Tools and supervision are provided by the host agency or organization.
