Garden Education Volunteers...

  • Participate in sustainable initiatives
  • Support the local community
  • Gain valuable education experience

This program gives ambitious college students and community members an opportunity to teach dynamic elementary and middle school students in our schoolyard gardens. As a member of the program, you will discover the value of experiential learning and sustainable urban agriculture while gaining skills in education and mentorship. Lessons support subjects taught in class, but focus on the science behind gardening, nutrition, and understanding the environment.

We ask that volunteers either commit to a weekly shift or bi-weekly shift of 1.5 hours. Unless you have a specific school in mind, we'll place you at a school based on the schedule you give us. You will stay at this school for the entire semester, working with the same classes. We provide in advance the lessons and directions on how to present the curriculum, but we understand this is a learning experience for the volunteers as much as the children. Lessons are 20-30 minutes. You and your team will also do some gardening during your shift when you're not teaching. In late April, we will host our annual Harvest Festival celebrating another great year teaching in the gardens, and volunteers are expected to bring a dish for the pot-luck.

The program will run 11 weeks beginning on Monday, September 14th and ending on December 4th. We'd like a commitment by September 4th. There will be a mandatory orientation day for those who decide to do the Garden Ed program (time & location TBD). From then on, we'll meet regularly.

Mission Statement

The Edible Peace Patch Project is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization whose mission is to address the impacts of poverty on education and diet-related health issues in Pinellas County by reaching out to students and community via sustainable food education programs.

Description

We currently operate seven schoolyard gardens in south side St. Pete, six of which are Title 1 schools. Our gardens are located at Campbell Park Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Maximo Elementary, Sanderlin IB World School, Melrose Elementary, Fairmount Park Elementary, and Bay Point Middle School. We also have assisted with the John Hopkins Middle School garden and many other community gardens.

Our next goal is to build a model farm-to-school food system that will provide educational support and training, spread food-literacy throughout the community, and deliver healthy, fresh, locally-grown food to participating school cafeterias.

We have volunteer opportunities in our schoolyard education program, our Wellness Kitchens, and at our schoolyard garden work days. We also have internship opportunities for those seeking experience in a non-profit, professional environment.

Schoolyard Education Program: This is a great program that gives you an opportunity to gain education experience and work closely in the garden and with the kids. It does require some training and is a weekly commitment.

Wellness Kitchens: In partnership with All Children's Fit4AllKids, we bring portable kitchens to our partner schools, then harvest, cook and discuss nutritious food with the students.

Garden Workdays: Our garden days happen one Satuday per month and are a great community even where we get the gardens ready to go for the kids! This is also a kid friendly garden day!

Internships: 10-hr/wk focused internships offered in a number of categories: Sustainable Urban Ag, Garden Edu, Business, Media, and Development. Interns get to create and complete an individual project in their area, and there are opportunities for academic credit.
