Join the Edible Peace Patch Project and our friends from Balance Tampa Bay in the schoolyard garden at Fairmount Park Elementary for a fun day of weeding, composting, trellis-building, planting, pruning, and many other tasks! We will take this time to catch up on garden maintenance and to finish larger projects so that the peace patch is ready for the students who will come out weekly in the spring to learn and explore. Morning refreshments are provided. Bring along your family, friends, and your gardening tools! Bring your compost-ables to donate to our compost bins (veggie and fruit scraps, oak leaves, coffee grounds, tea bags, BUT NO MEAT or DAIRY, please). Mission Statement
The Edible Peace Patch Project is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization whose mission is to address the impacts of poverty on education and diet-related health issues in Pinellas County by reaching out to students and community via sustainable food education programs.
Description
We currently operate seven schoolyard gardens in south side St. Pete, six of which are Title 1 schools. Our gardens are located at Campbell Park Elementary, Lakewood Elementary, Maximo Elementary, Sanderlin IB World School, Melrose Elementary, Fairmount Park Elementary, and Bay Point Middle School. We also have assisted with the John Hopkins Middle School garden and many other community gardens.
Our next goal is to build a model farm-to-school food system that will provide educational support and training, spread food-literacy throughout the community, and deliver healthy, fresh, locally-grown food to participating school cafeterias.
We have volunteer opportunities in our schoolyard education program, our Wellness Kitchens, and at our schoolyard garden work days. We also have internship opportunities for those seeking experience in a non-profit, professional environment.
Schoolyard Education Program: This is a great program that gives you an opportunity to gain education experience and work closely in the garden and with the kids. It does require some training and is a weekly commitment.
Wellness Kitchens: In partnership with All Children's Fit4AllKids, we bring portable kitchens to our partner schools, then harvest, cook and discuss nutritious food with the students.
Garden Workdays: Our garden days happen one Satuday per month and are a great community even where we get the gardens ready to go for the kids! This is also a kid friendly garden day!
Internships: 10-hr/wk focused internships offered in a number of categories: Sustainable Urban Ag, Garden Edu, Business, Media, and Development. Interns get to create and complete an individual project in their area, and there are opportunities for academic credit.
