The MVFC STEM Certificate Program is an arm of the Mar Vista Family Center and is committed to working with underserved Latino students in the community to help find their passions through the exposure of STEM disciplines. We work primarily with high school students in the Los Angeles and Culver City Districts. Through the completion of the four courses of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and a final project, students will receive the MVFC STEM Certificate. The program is focused on developing curricula based on hands-on projects that require minimal setup and only with household and/or affordable items, with the idea that students can easily replicate it at home so to take the project further and explore it deeper. We are firm believers in relatable and pragmatic teachings of STEM with the intention of helping students to bridge concepts taught in school to their daily lives and environments.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Mar Vista Family Center is to provide low-income families with quality early childhood education, youth enrichment, and educational tools to create positive change in their lives and their community. Every program adheres to the basic premise that it is critical to empower children, teens and adults to play vital and responsible roles - as decision-makers, community leaders, mentors, classroom volunteers, and fundraisers.

Description

Mar Vista Family Center was founded in 1977 as a preschool for low-income families that aimed to engage parents as partners in the education of their children.

It is located in a low-income, densely, populated area of Los Angeles, adjacent to the only federal housing project in West Los Angeles.

The local residents are affected by violence, poverty and lack of education. Each year nearly 1,000 children, teens and adults of predominantly Hispanic origin take advantage of MVFC's programs.

Mar Vista Family Center currently operates various projects within three main program areas: Early Childhood Education, Youth, and Community.

By Youth For Youth is a program for youth that provides positive role models and important leadership development for 75 underprivileged youths ranging in age from 13 and up.
