ORGANIZATION: Ethiopian Community in Seattle

JOB SUMMARY:

Promote the overall mission and vision of ECS and help establish the organization as a high quality, welcoming, community resource. Promote and advertise ECS’ events, community service activities, and achievements, both internally and externally. Provide regular communications to ECS members to inform them of ECS news, volunteer needs, and other relevant information. Document and record ECS events and maintain picture gallery and event summary archives.

This position is unpaid and does not offer benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Public Relations

-Make connections with non-profit organizations and community institutions to increase awareness of ECS and its community services. Create and maintain a list of contacts and their interactions with ECS.

-Promote ECS by publishing information about upcoming events, completed events, community service activities, and achievements both internally (for example, on the ECS Website and the ECS Facebook page) and externally (for example, through local news agencies and other non-profit organizations).

-Invite non-profit organizations, local government officials, and news agencies to participate in ECS events and manage / coordinate attendance.

-Coordinate with news agencies to provide reporting coverage of ECS events and services.

Communications

-Create a regularly recurring newsletter which can be distributed to ECS community members

-Maintain an up to date distribution list for newsletter which includes email addresses and mailing addresses

-Compose and distribute communications to ECS community members on an as needed basis

Event Reporting and Documentation

-Take pictures during ECS events which capture event proceedings, community involvement, and participant emotions

-Create event picture galleries

-Interview event participants, including planners, speakers and performers, ECS leadership, community members, and non-ECS participants

-Create written summaries of events which include description and purpose of events, pictures with captions, and excerpts from interviews

-Maintain an event archive which organizes and preserves event write ups and event pictures

Other Responsibilities

-Manage resources needed for communications and event reporting, such as camera and virtual storage space for pictures. Work with Community Director to acquire new and / or update resources.

-Maintain program/client confidentiality and treat each individual with dignity and respect.

-Establish a welcoming environment that invites participation and partnership by all members of the community.

-Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings, individual coaching sessions with Community Director, and staff trainings as required.

-Perform other duties as assigned by the Community Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-At least two year work or volunteer experience in a public relations and / or communications role.

-Associates degree in journalism, English, or other related field.

-Excellent verbal and written communication in English.

-Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and picture editing software.

-Ability to create virtual picture galleries and albums.

-Excellent organizational skills.

-Ability to work both independently with considerable self-direction and as a contributing member of a team.

-Available to work a flexible work schedule including some weekends or evenings as necessary.

-Must pass Washington State Patrol background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

-Excellent verbal and written communication in Amharic. Proficiency in any other Ethiopian language also preferred.

-Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or related field of study, or equivalent.

-Three to five years of work or volunteer experience in a public relations and / or communications role with management responsibilities.

The Ethiopian Community in Seattle (ECS) has been an operational agency for the refugees and immigrants of Ethiopia and African descents in Seattle since 1983. It was organized by a group of immigrants who volunteered their time, energy and financial resources to assist their fellow Ethiopians during hard times. This noble beginning developed until the organization officially registered as a 501(C)3 non-profit organization under the laws of the State of Washington.
