What is this Volunteer Opportunity?

We are looking for volunteers willing to visit the local MEPS (Military Enlistment Processing Station) periodically to place and replenish Humanist specific literature placed with other non-Federal Entity religious literature (such as Bibles and other religious specific brochures). It is important to place Humanist documents ith equal prominence as religious documents to ensure incoming recruits are equally aware of all options, and do not feel discriminated against for their Humanist, atheist, and otherwise nontheist beliefs.

What is MAAF?

The Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a supportive community for nontheistic service members, to educate military leaders about nontheism, and to resolve insensitive practices that illegally promote religion or unethically discriminate against nontheism.

MAAF is dedicated to building community for atheists and humanists in the military. MAAF connects military members from around the world with each other and with local organizations. In addition to our community services, we take action to educate and train both the military and civilian community about atheism in the military and issues that face us. Where necessary, MAAF identifies, examines, and responds to insensitive practices that illegally promote religion over non-religion within the military or unethically discriminate against minority religions or differing beliefs.

MAAF National is located in Alexandria, VA, but we have Affiliate groups across the country, and several overseas. We are bringing military members together to socialize with and support one another on military installations, ships, planes, and across units.

A MAAF MEPS Volunteer will:

MAAF Volunteers are designated to place supplies Humanist materials at the Jacksonville MEPS Station and replenish these supplies as necessary, pursuant to MCDR Policy Memorandum 11-2, Operation of non-Federal Entity (NFE).

These materials will not imply government sponsorship, will not disparage other NFEs, and will include no commercial solicitations. Literature will not adversely impact good order and discipline, although certain individuals may disagree with its content.

MAAF will ship the materials to the volunteer to be placed with equal prominence alongside other NFE materials.

MAAF volunteers will place and replenish the materials at minimum monthly, at maximum weekly, and will be trained to comply with MEPS policy.

Volunteers will contact MAAF to request shipments of replacement literature as needed. Volunteers will record the number of brochures placed each month and send these totals to MAAF.

Volunteers will record and submit their volunteer hours each month utilizing the online form MAAF makes accessible.
