Do you enjoy working with children? We are looking for volunteers to assist the Children’s Services Advocate at YWCA's Pathways for Women housing program.

Volunteers will be expected to assist the Children's Services Advocate with providing both Homework Help/Tutoring and teaching occasional Money Management Lessons.

Homework Club Helpers/Tutors:

Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-5:30pm

This volunteer will help with the "Homework Club" which meets week nights for an hour. This program is for school age children from pre-school through high school. The volunteer will assist with handing out snacks and then helping children complete their homework for the day. Often students have a difficult time staying focused an completing their homework, which can make it quite challenging. Parents and students rely on Homework Club for students to complete their homework, so patience and consistency are a MUST! Volunteers need to be confident assisting children one on one AND they need to be comfortable circulating around the whole group to ensure everyone is getting the assistance they need.

Money Management Lessons

Volunteers will also be expected to assist the Advocate with teaching money management lessons to kids 10yrs-17yrs old. Having positive outcomes in teen money management is of Children's Services program goals. The volunteer does not need to have experience teaching Money Management, the Children's Services Advocate will provide the curriculum and be available for assistance.

By helping the Children’s Services Advocate support children and teenagers of the Pathways for Women housing program, you will be supporting and helping to empower the whole family system.

Responsibilities include:

  • Helping children and teenagers with their homework
  • Providing childcare and social activities for children of all ages
  • Helping to maintain a safe and clean classroom environment
  • Helping in preparing healthy snacks and beverages for children

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children
  • Engaging and outgoing personality
  • Ability to assist children with homework
  • Able to work early evenings and some day time hours
  • Must be at least 16 years of age (or volunteer with a parent or guardian)
  • Be able to make a minimum of a six month commitment

IMPORTANT:

All volunteers in Children’s Services Department must understand the following things that are required to work in Children’s Services:

  • For all scheduled groups, activities and events it’s expected volunteers need to arrive early 15-30 min before group starts to set up and stay up to 30 min after group to help clean up.
  • Being on time is essential. Arriving late and leaving early disrupts the children.
  • Having reliable transportation is needed.
  • Cleaning and organizing the Children’s room, moving furniture and taking out garbage is part of the job and is expected.
