ORGANIZATION: Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo

Our All Ages Volunteer Day is a wonderful way to get involved in the community and give back to those in need.

It is also a great opportunity to learn about how hunger impacts local residents and what role the Food Bank plays in alleviating hunger. What you can expect An orientation from the Volunteer Coordinator and an age-appropriate project. An example of a project is assembling a fresh produce or non-perishable food bag or sorting non-perishable food collected during the Hope for the Holiday food drive. Mission Statement

Mission Statement: The mission of the Food Bank Coalition is to work with a network of community partners to alleviate hunger in San Luis Obispo County and build a healthier community.

Description

Founded in 1989 the Food Bank Coalition distributed 400,000 pounds of food annually through 20 non-profit agency partners. Today, about 6 million pounds of food pass in and out of our doors each year, half of which is fresh produce. We work hand in hand with more than 200 non-profit agencies including groups like homeless shelters, food pantries and senior centers and more. We also have direct distribution programs: Cal Fresh/Food Stamps, Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP), Food for Children, Harvest Bag, Healthy Food for Local Families, Senior Brown Bag and Summer Feeding Service Program (SFSP).

Today, we are fortunate to have two warehouses to cover San Luis Obispo county, our main warehouse is in Paso Robles and our second location in Oceano. Together these two warehouses give us 22,000 square feet of storage space. We keep our overhead less than 6%, which allows us to turn $1 into $10 worth of food. We are able to do this because of our hard working staff, knowledgeable board, and large volunteer core. Our network of volunteers number more than 600 strong. They are the people who enable us to get the food from our distribution sites into the hands of SLO County residents in need.

We can think of no better place to operate a Food Bank than right here in San Luis Obispo County. We are very proud to be part of life here on the Central Coast, and we work hard at our mission to see that no one in SLO County goes hungry.
