Mission Statement
To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Description
Special Olympics New York provides inclusive opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to discover and unleash the champion within. Our athletes experience the thrill of competing in authentic sports. They overcome defeat, taste victory and stay active for life.
Every competitive athlete, no matter what their abilities, shares certain qualities. Drive. Perseverance. Confidence. For athletes with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics New York provides a training ground where those qualities are refined and given room to grow.
From the Young Athletes program for children ages 2 through 7, to Unified Sports that bring together athletes of all abilities, to credible competitions, Special Olympics New York athletes have the opportunity to compete on a level playing field.
Along the way, athletes develop skills that accompany them through every part of life, helping them set an example of what people with intellectual disabilities can really do.
