World Learning’s International Development and Exchange Programs based in Washington, DC has hosted more than 4,000 high school youth from over 75 countries in dynamic short and long-term programs since 2007. Regardless of the region or thematic focus, experiential learning and community-based action planning are the core qualities that characterize all of our youth programs. Students return to their home countries empowered as young leaders equipped to carry out the action plans they developed on their programs.

Local Coordinators are a crucial part of our year-long academic exchanges. They are responsible for placing and monitoring students, as well as managing the program on a local level. Each coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Volunteer Host Families: Recruiting, screening and selecting host families prior to the students’ departures from their home countries;
  • Host Schools: Securing enrollment for the students in accredited secondary schools prior to the students’ departures from their home countries;
  • Clustering: Placing students in clusters (areas) wherever possible not to exceed more than 120 miles from the home;
  • Host Family Orientation: Providing an orientation for host families prior to the student's arrival to the home;
  • Arrival Orientation for Participants: Providing an orientation for all participants after they arrive to your local community;
  • Participant Monitoring: Careful documentation of student and host family communication to ensure the safety and well-being of participants on at least a monthly basis. Resolving host family and student issues as they arise with World Learning support;
  • Reporting: Providing regular updates on participants and notifying World Learning of any student issues that could impact student health, safety or well-being, serious problems, controversies and incidents or allegations, and reporting any information as requested;
  • Enhancements: Providing enhancement activities and cultural activities to further support the program goals and facilitate leadership development at least twice per semester. Activities must focus on youth development through interactive and engaging activities; and
  • Community Service: Support students in acheiving community service goals.

Coordinators can earn up to $500 per host family placement and $1000 to monitor each student during the year, with potential for bonuses. Suggested starting place is three students per cluster.

Mission Statement

World Learning is a nonprofit organization advancing leadership in more than 60 countries. We envision a just world, driven by engaged citizens and thriving communities. To achieve this goal, our mission is to empower people and strengthen institutions through education, exchange, and development programs.

Description

Education

Our study abroad programs offer American high school and undergraduate students the chance to have immersive, life-transforming experiences in more than 50 countries. The Experiment in International Living offers three- to five-week summer programs that immerse high school students in other cultures and languages. SIT Study Abroad provides undergraduates academically-rich, semester, summer and academic year programs with opportunities for field research and International Honors Program comparative study. Our accredited SIT Graduate Institute offers internationally focused, full-time and low-residency master’s degrees, as well as certificate and professional development programs.

Exchange

World Learning brings emerging leaders from 140 countries annually to the United States for International Exchanges. We offer short-term learning experiences for individuals seeking professional development through links to US and international colleagues, new insights, and a broader view of core US values and culture. Academic exchanges place international students in US colleges and universities to strengthen their leadership and career-specific skills while they explore US culture. Young people from around the globe learn about leadership, current issues, and peacebuilding on World Learning youth programs.

Development

Our International Development Programs prepare communities worldwide to effectively address critical issues such as poverty and exclusion, youth participation, educational access and quality, the spread of HIV/AIDS, the marginalization of women and children, and government accountability. We work with our local partners to identify specific needs, resources, and challenges--valuable local context that informs the design and implementation of custom development activities. This approach ensures that our partners invest deeply in projects and provide the local leadership required to ensure their long-term success.
