Sunset Park AmeriCorps is looking for members to help serve in Sunset Park, a diverse, low-income community in southwestern Brooklyn primarily composed of recent immigrants. Members serve under our parent organization, NYU Lutheran Family Health Centers. NYU LFHC practices preventative health care by providing a wide range of educational, counseling, and advocacy services to the community.

We have the follow positions at this program:


All

1. Case Management at Family Support Services (Full Time) - Bilingual in English and Mandarin required. AmeriCorps member will assist clients by helping them access public benefits, literacy, housing, domestic violence, employment, food stamps, public assistance, food pantries, immigration, childcare facilities, and legal resources through providing case management and supportive counseling. A background in Psychology, or Social work preferred. Located: 6025 6th Ave, BK NY 11220

2. Project Reach Youth (Full Time & Part Time) - Engage with youth and adult students between the ages of 16-24 for HSE tutoring. Ideal candidate would have a background in education or tutoring and public speaking. Project Reach Youth - 199 14th St, 3rd floor, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

3. Financial Literacy/Workforce Development Assistant (Full Time) Fluency in English and Spanish required - AmeriCorps member will create and facilitate financial literacy information sessions for ESOL classes and help with outreach, recruitment and coordination processes for Cooperative initiatives. A background in public speaking, working with immigrant youth and families, volunteer experience, computer database application. Located: 6025 6th Ave, BK NY 11220

4. Brooklyn Workforce Innovations - Brooklyn Woods (Full Time) - AmeriCorps member will help build the capacity of a job training program that teaches woodworking skills to low income New Yorkers with barriers to employment. AmeriCorps member will work on outreach, recruitment, screening candidates, post training support as well as general program support. Ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, willingness to take initiative, able to handle administrative duties. Located: 125 8th Street Brooklyn, NY 11215

General information about our program:

- Must be 18 years and older ( some college experience required)

- Must be a US Lawful resident/US citizen

1. Our positions are located in Sunset Park and Park Slope, Brooklyn

2. The term of service will be 10.5 months for Full time positions

3. You must complete 1700/FT hours of direct service during your term, averaging 35-45 hours per week

4. Most positions are 5 days per week, about 9am - 5pm daily; some may require alternative schedules on certain days

5. Members receive a living stipend of $12,530 by the end of the service contract for Fulltime

6. After successful completion of service, members will receive an education award of $5,730/FT

7. You will receive on-site training at your service site, as well additional training throughout your term of service with the whole AmeriCorps team

Lutheran Family Health Centers(LFHC) Department of Community-Based Programs has provided educational and supportive services for community residents of southwest Brooklyn for over 35 years. Description

We offer the following areas of expertise:

  • Culturally competent programming that meets the needs of the diverse populations, particularly new immigrant families, in our community. These programs include: Adult Basic Education, GED-prep, English Classes, Family Support Services, Day Care Centers, After-school Programming, AmeriCorps Service Opportunities, HIV Peer Education, Youth Development, and Services for Older Adults.
  • Strong collaborative relationships with community partners to create integrated service delivery systems.
  • A model of community building, that promotes participatory management and supports relationship and community involvement at all levels.
  • Recognizing that families are resources to their own members, to other families, to programs and to communities.
  • Advocating for services and systems that are fair, responsive and accountable to the families served. Mobilizing formal and informal resources to support family development.
