ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Alabama Mississippi Region

  • Proactively support and guide Red Cross units in volunteer recruitment, reception, retention, and recognition to build health professional capacity across all business lines and at all levels of the organization in support of organizational priorities reflected in the Chief Nurse Initiatives
    • Partner with the Regional Volunteer Director and staff to recruit and support nursing and health volunteers to assure appropriate training & engagement
    • With the support of the Nursing Network and region, develop and implement a plan to engage nurses and other health professional volunteers (including students) across all business lines with an emphasis on reflecting community demographics. Set realistic targets and focus on delivering results in the region
    • Establish a good working relationship with key leaders at the regional level (e.g., Emergency Services Director, CEO, nurse/health leaders in other business lines)
    • Establish relationships with community partners (nurses and non-nurses) and maintain updated roster (State Nurse Network Roster)
    • Coordinate meetings for regional nurses and health professionals, engaging colleagues and partners as appropriate in support of the Chief Nurse Initiatives
    • Act as a resource for nursing and health in the region across all business lines
    • Regularly communicate nursing successes (e.g., awards, media coverage, projects) to the SNL and through other communication venues
    • Assure that nurse volunteers enter their nurse specific information in Volunteer Connection and submit all volunteer hours
    • Submit all RNL hours in local/regional Volunteer Connection group
    • Complete quarterly metrics
  • RNLs should recruit for and mentor their own replacements.

  • Time Commitment: minimum of approximately 6 - 8 hours per week are required to carry out RNL leadership and support functions.
  • Qualifications: Current, unencumbered, active licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) / Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)
    • Knowledge of Red Cross structure, systems, and programs/services
    • Cultural sensitivity and awareness
    • Enthusiasm about Red Cross mission and programs
    • Willingness to become familiar with ALL Red Cross business lines
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
    • Team and relationship building, talent management, and succession planning skills to grow the organization’s capabilities
    • Understanding of the value of nursing and health volunteers and providing leadership and support to ensure they are productive and have a mutually rewarding experience
    • Ability to manage projects, collaborate, lead change, and motivate others
    • Acquaintance with local nurses, people, businesses, churches, schools, and organizations
    • Access to and ability to use telephonic and computer technology, basic office software (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel, email), and social media (e.g., Facebook) for virtual interaction
  • Relationships Regional and State Nurse Leaders, Nursing Network, Regional Volunteer Directors, local nurses and health professionals, Red Cross staff, volunteers, donors, external organizations, and the public
  • Length of Appointment The RNL appointment is a two-year, potentially renewable term. RNLs should recruit for and mentor their own replacements.
  • Development Opportunities Contribute to advancing the mission of the American Red Cross (ARC) by personally impacting health capacity and health professional involvement in the ARC
    • Build and strengthen the contributions and integration of nursing and health volunteers, assuring a well-developed Red Cross nursing and health workforce and future
    • Strengthen communities through your Red Cross role
    • Be in a position to pursue additional leadership opportunities made available by your RNL role and experience
    • Community advocacy and leadership
    • Interact with and meet a variety of people
    • Team building with the Red Cross, volunteers, and community partners
    • Expand knowledge base in humanitarian efforts and emergency/disaster response
    • Strategically impact health capacity and relationship/partnership-building
    • Strengthen operations across all business lines of service
    • Enhance leadership and communication skills in a global and highly recognized non-profit organization
  • Requirements: • American Red Cross Volunteer Orientation
    • On-the-job training from supervisor, as needed
    • Nursing License/Certification (RN, BSN or higher preferred; RN, LPN, LVN)
    • Review Nursing and Health documents on the Exchange, including the Nursing and Health Leadership Toolkit
