Although the numbers have decreased, Los Angeles still has the largest population of homeless military Veterans in the nation. The latest homeless count estimates more than 6,300 Veterans are living on L.A. streets. Homeless Vets account for nearly 20% of the people living on the streets and in shelters in Los Angeles. To that end, the first annual Los Angeles Veteran & Families Stand Down will take place December 20-22, 2014. This three-day event will be held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. The location, size and scope of the event will serve both male and female Veterans, as well as their families. For information regarding the event, click here. For more information on becoming a Stand Down sponsor or volunteer, contact Sharon Elefant at 619.732.2135 or email selefant@teamamvets.com.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide support for and to ensure resources are available to the men and women who have served our great nation, and to enhance the mental, physical and social well-being of all Veterans in California.
Description
On any given night, there are more than 60,000 homeless veterans in the United States, nearly 10% of who live in California. Many of these individuals suffer from physical, emotional or mental challenges; are unemployed, or are single parents with dependent children.
Many of these returning veterans receive help through the HUD-VASH (HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) voucher program, which provides apartment housing to homeless veterans at a greatly reduced rate. While these vouchers provide a safe, clean living space, the apartments are unfurnished, leaving the veterans to sleep on the floor in sleeping bags with no means to cook, sit, or enjoy the basic comforts of a furnished home. It is this gap that Team AMVETS seeks to close. Team AMVETS California Charities, Inc., a 501(c)(3) charity operating under a Memorandum of Understanding with Veterans Administration Offices across California, has created the "Team AMVETS Welcome Home Program" to provide comfortable furnishings to veterans who receive HUD-VASH vouchers. The cost to fully furnish an apartment is $1,500 per veteran, which covers the price of living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture (including a bed with a brand new mattress and linens), as well as kitchen accessories. Our goal in 2014 is to help each of the estimated 6,000 homeless California veterans rebuild their lives as they integrate back into the workforce with increased pride and self-esteem.
Your support of the "Team AMVETS Welcome Home Program" will provide the resources needed for us to give formerly homeless veterans a place to call home. Please help us "Welcome Home" our veterans in style by supporting Team AMVETS California Charities, Inc. We are dedicated to serving the needs of our "Heroes" and their families for many decades to come. These brave men and women, who have answered the call of this great nation, deserve nothing less!
We need volunteers to help with furniture prep and deliveries, stand downs, and other outreach events!
