HOMEAID’S MISSION:

How would you like to be a part of a mission to end homelessness?

ABOUT HOMEAID:

HomeAid Orange County is the founding chapter of a leading national non-profit provider of housing for today's homeless. Through advocacy, development and service, the organization builds and renovates housing developments for homeless families and individuals while they rebuild their lives.

Founded in 1989 by the Orange County chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIA/SC), an affiliate of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), HomeAid has expanded from the initial chapter in Orange County to 15 chapters throughout the country.

WHY THIS ROLE IS CRITICAL:

The Shelter Development Volunteer (SDV) is involved in HomeAid’s projects from concept to turnover for HomeAid Orange County with the mission to end homelessness through advocacy, development and service. This includes working with HomeAid’s Project Manager to expedite and facilitate the entitlement, design and construction of projects. The Shelter Development Volunteer should also be self-motivated, well rounded, and socially responsible: assisting the HomeAid staff with recruiting new builders, suppliers and subcontractors to position HomeAid Orange County as a trusted and visible leader in ending homelessness.

HOW THIS ROLE IS EFFECTIVE IN ENDING HOMELESSNESS:

  • Providing input and assistance on new developments; from preliminary investigation, determining the feasibility of a project, assessing the legal, political and entitlement issues, outlining a project timeline and preparing a budget with supporting documentation.
  • Assisting Project Manager in rehabilitation and construction developments, conducting site meetings and visits with Builder Captains and helping to manage project communications with contractors and service providers.
  • Managing contracts, overseeing budgets, evaluating pro formas and facilitating meetings between contractors and volunteer committees related to housing.
  • Assisting in development of project schedules to meet target completion deadlines.
  • Cultivating and understanding the partnerships between planning, engineering and architecture, landscape and design consulting groups, working closely with these groups to ensure that design intent and cost objectives are met.
  • Participating in the bidding process, drafting construction contracts for review by the Project Manager and supporting field operations as required to expedite the timely progress and completion of projects.
  • Drafting a final job cost summary of all costs and evaluation of in-kind donations for labor and materials upon completion of projects for review by the Project Manager

THE QUALITIES OF AN INDIVIDUAL WHO WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE:

  • Ability to work 8 hours per week
  • This is an UNPAID volunteer position

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE OF THE KEY INDIVIDUAL:

  • Prefer individual has a B.A. degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Construction Technology or Business Administration
  • Hands-on ability to work with computer programs, proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project and other related technology
  • Strong working knowledge of land development, construction processes, legal and technical requirements
  • Valid California driver license and proof of insurance

Description

Since 1989, HomeAid Orange County has constructed 70 different housing projects for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Our unique model, rooted in in-kind donations of labor and materials, saves 30% of market-rate costs or more on each HomeAid construction project. Simply put, HomeAid is a nonprofit developer of shelters and affordable housing for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
