The winter season can be especially difficult for families living in poverty. Parents feel pressure to create a festive atmosphere while struggling to meet basic needs.
The YWCA Adopt-a-Family program helps bridge the gap -- it's a fun and meaningful way to get into the holiday spirit while helping families in need!
After our Adopt-A-Family program is over, many families coming into our emergency housing need presents to celebrate the holidays, too. With donations of unwrapped toys, volunteers will help create a little toyshop for case managers to shop for the new families.
Volunteers will get to be holiday elves! They will organize toys by age and type, help shop for the kids, and put together bags of toys.
Requirements:
- Minimum age is 12 years old (If under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult).
- Frequent bending and lifting of 10-25 lbs.
- Organized and outgoing.
- Ability to follow YWCA procedures and work as a team.
What to Wear:
- Close-toed, flat comfortable shoes that provide safe footing on wet and dry surfaces are strongly recommended.
- Dress warmly--volunteers will work indoors and outdoors.
- Festive holiday attire encouraged!
Event Details:
- Each shift begins with training on purpose, proper lifting, and YWCA procedures.
- At least one, four-hour shift commitment required - morning(8-12) and afternoon(12-4) shifts available.
- Volunteers can check-in anytime with the Lead Holiday Toyshop Helper or YWCA supervisor.
- Snacks and light refreshments will be provided.
