Overview:
The Doctrine Development team writes and edits doctrine that guides the set up and operations of activities responding to disasters of all sizes. Volunteers will be offered challenging and diverse work assignments as the team provides doctrine assistance to all Disaster Cycle Services volunteers and employees.

Purpose:
Augmenting our staff’s work by providing additional support in the form of copyediting.

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers will be responsible for copy editing doctrine, guidance, communications and training materials of various lengths following AP style and Red Cross styles.

Work will be done online using Word (2007 - 2010) and can be done on site or remotely. Most documents will need to be turned around within five business days. Volunteers will work in a fast-paced business environment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with writing and editing communications, business documents and other areas that promote strong skills in writing and interpersonal communication.
  • Solid skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook. Working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint would be helpful.
  • English required, but strong Spanish (writing/editing) would open up additional project possibilities.
  • Willingness to support the Red Cross Mission.

Names and contact information for two references (reference letters are not required), who should be familiar with the applicant’s writing skills

Time Commitment:
Up to 10 hours per week with potential for more hours, if interested. There may be weeks without work and there may be days when a short turnaround is needed. We expect to have a pool of editors which will allow us to have some flexibility with work assignments.

The national headquarters of the American Red Cross provides assistance with shaping and leading the organization in our mission and strategic plan. National Headquarters also assists with technical guidance to the many Red Cross units, such as Chapters, Armed Forces Emergency Services Stations and Blood Services regions. These units are responsible for the direct service to the community including disaster response and preparedness, messaging to Armed Forces military and their families, collecting and delivering blood products, teaching health and safety skills and helping reunite families through our international services.
