Ecumenical Refugee and Immigration Services is seeking new mentors. Mentors are "first friends" to our refugees - they become trusted friends and advisors as they learn to navigate life in the USA. The main priorities of the mentorship program are to provide cultural orientation and support to newly arrived refugees.
Imagine leaving behind the life you know, your friends, your family, and packing only one suitcase or bag to move to a new country. You have to learn a new language, new customs, and find a job quickly after arrival. Mentors can commit to as little as 3 hours a month or as much as 10 hours a week to welcome new families to Colorado.
This opportunity is extremely flexible and is great for university students new to working with refugees/immigrants. Our mentors pick activities with their families such as showing them how to take the bus, assisting with learning how to grocery shop in the US, helping sign up for a library card, and helping fill out job applications. Some of the most meaningful interactions can be as simple as helping a new arrival practice their English while reading a picture book to their kids or visiting downtown Denver and talking about American culture and customs.
Please contact us for more information, this opportunity is a fun way to add volunteer hours in a multi cultural environment to your resume!
