Hello there! Do you have an interest in biking or cycling? Do you like to have fun? Do you want to meet new people? Well come join us at Gearin’ Up as volunteer.

We have openings for volunteer mechanics and peer teachers. you can volunteer for our youth or adult programs.

No experience is necessary! We're looking for anyone interested in learning how to fix bikes or teach kids how to fix bikes and in turn helping others fix their bikes. Experienced staff are always available during open shop hours for any new volunteers to ask questions.

Gearin’ Up offers a flexible volunteer schedule that you set yourself. Once you attend one of our monthly volunteer orientations, you are free to volunteer Washington DC’s only community used bike shop.

Gearin’ Up Bicycles’ purpose is to create career development opportunities and teach essential workplace skills to teenagers from underserved communities, while encouraging cycling as a practical, healthy means of transportation. Community Outreach

Just heard about Gearin' Up Bicycles? Want to help spread the word? Choose some shops and community/social centers in your neighborhood, or places at your school, and put up posters or drop off some brochures for us.

Photography

We can use more photos of our programs! If you love taking pictures, we'd love you to help capture everything that is going on with Gearin' Up Bicycles.

Accounting

If you have accounting experience working with small businesses or nonprofits and are looking for some way to share your expertise, please contact us!

Truck/Van Drivers

We need experienced drivers who will pick up bikes from donors on a very occasional basis and bring them to us. Every spring and fall we collect bikes at drives throughout the D.C. metro area, and helping run these drives and pick up the bikes is a great way to support our work.

Organize a Bike Drive

Organize a local bike collection in your neighborhood through your school, community group, church, or family! When you do the outreach to bring the bike donors to your drive, we'll help arrange transportation of the bikes to our storage location or store.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Description

What We Do

Gearin’ Up Bicycles, a non-profit organization (501(c)(3)) based in Washington D.C., is a community used bicycle store empowering and employing young adults from underserved communities. In our future downtown retail space, we will sell quality, affordable, used bicycles in addition to basic bicycle tools and accessories. All sales representatives and mechanics will be teenagers from underserved communities. We will ensure a constant supply for our mechanic staff to tune-up or rebuild and prepare for sale via ongoing in-store collection, bike drives and fundraisers. In addition to providing the community with quality, affordable used bicycles, we give our staff members the skills they need to succeed in their future with Gearin’ Up and beyond.

Why We Do It

At Gearin’ Up Bicycles, we believe every young adult deserves a bright future and the opportunity to reach their potential. Under professional management in a safe environment, we provide young adults with valuable business and life skills including bicycle repair, customer service, and sales. In addition, Gearin’ Up Bicycles also emphasizes building self-confidence and empowering our staff to reach their goals- academically, professionally and personally
