BAYCAT is an exciting nonprofit social enterprise that teaches media arts to youth and young adults. Through our after-school classes in animation, video production and audio production, we teach young people skills that foster personal expression, creative problem solving, and an awareness of media literacy and social justice. BAYCAT is seeking an energetic, creative and resourceful Volunteer Teaching Assistant to be part of our education team for the Spring Semester. The ideal candidate is someone with some knowledge of media practices (video, music, motion graphics) who would like to broaden their production experience by assisting in our media arts classes. Though this position is unpaid, you'll have access to a state-of-the-art digital media facility and will be able to hone your own production skills through assisting a class of youth. You'll also be connected to our community of producers and youth educators. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in media arts education who would like a hands-on experience in an after-school classroom. OUR MISSION AND VISION The mission of BAYCAT is to educate, empower and employ underserved youth and young adults to produce digital media that tells their unique stories and engages them to positively transform themselves, their communities and the world. BAYCAT believes every person's story matters. We envision a world where media and technology facilitate the telling and the hearing of stories from the broadest possible range of experiences in a way that moves people to create positive change in their communities. BAYCAT is a community media producer of San Francisco -- developing messages by the people, for the people. We offer free classes in film/TV production, audio/music production, animation, and graphic/web design primarily to the youth and young adults coming from Bayview Hunters Point and other historically underserved communities in the city. BAYCAT then hires our graduates through our enterprise arm, Studio BAYCAT, to produce professional marketing communication materials for clients that include businesses, government, local Bayview merchants and nonprofits. BAYCAT inspires young adults to stay in school and become lifelong learners, and empowers them to use the power of media and design to shape their communities. DETAILS: Length of commitment: February 9th - May 7th, 2015 during one of the following classes: Beginning Film: Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:30-6:30pm Digital Music Production: Mondays & Wednesdays 4:30-6:30pm Advanced Film: Mondays & Wednesdays 4:30-6:30pm About the classes: Each class will have a maximum of 10-15 students, and will be lead by an experienced head instructor. As the volunteer, you can help teach lesson plans, learn about classroom workflow, and be a positive mentor to our youth. Though the position is unpaid, we can often provide internship credit through schools - if interested, inform us during the application process. Qualifications: • Some knowledge of media production (Premiere Pro, DSLR cameras, Pro Tools, Audio Recording) • An interest in and/or experience with youth mentorship or teaching • Ability to commit to the full summer (volunteers should miss no more than 4 sessions) TO APPLY: Send a brief cover letter, resumé and link to work samples electronically at volunteer@baycat.org
