CONTACT offers Crisis HOTLINE Training

Starting Tuesday, February 10, 2015 (evening series) and February 12, 2015 (morning series), through April 2015, CONTACT will offer free training courses for prospective volunteeers. A one hour, no obligation, orientation session will be held on February 10 at 7:00pm and February 12 at 9:30am, at the Pennington United Methodist Church, 60 South Main Street, Pennington. There is a choice of morning and evening courses which teach compassionate listening skills, telephone crisis intervention, suicide prevention and much more. Representatives from community programs are speakers on a variety of topics. Taking this course is a great way to become a better listener and help other people at the same time.

Spring 2015 Class (#82) will meet weekly as follows
Evening Series (7:00pm-10:00pm) Starts Tuesday, February 10, 2015
Morning Series (9:30am-12:30pm) Starts Thursday, February 12, 2015

Classes are open to anyone age 18 or older who is motivated to help others. References are required before actual volunteer work begins. Upon satisfactory completion of training, each trainee is expected to volunteer at least 100 hours in the first year to qualify for free training. The course is free with the understanding that the trainee must volunteer 100 hours within one year of completing the course. Please note: Deposit for crisis line training is $150, which is fully reimbursable after 100 hours of service within the first year. For those who wish to take the training for personal growth, without the obligation to volunteer, the fee for the course is $150.00.

College students are encouraged to enroll in training. It may be possible to get college credit for internships on the HOTLINE by arrangement with college professors.

Description

CONTACT of Mercer County is a family of programs which focus volunteer action to deal with community needs. A crisis intervention HOTLINE is staffed exclusively by trained volunteers. The Telephone Reassurance Program utilizes volunteers to make daily or as scheduled "check-in" calls to seniors or shut in adults. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) helps mature volunteers - 55 plus - locate and remain in community service activities focused on a host of community needs.
