November 20th is Universal Children's Day -- a day devoted to promoting the well-being of children. This November also marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989, is the most widely supported human rights treaty in history, and it outlines the basic rights of every child, such as care, protection, health and to grow in a safe, loving environment. Today, the United States and Somalia are the only two holdout nations to not yet have ratified the CRC.

Join SOS Children's Villages USA this November 20th as we celebrate Universal Children's Day and the 25th Anniversary of the CRC by canvasing across Washington, D.C. We will be informing the public about the CRC and obtaining signatures for our petition to President Obama, which calls for the U.S. Government to ratify this important treaty.

Meet at the SOS Children's Villages office downtown and then travel to Farragut North, Metro Center or Dupont Circle. Volunteers are asked to engage with the general public to request signatures for the petition and pass out information about Universal Children's Day and the CRC.

The volunteer opportunity will conclude back at the SOS Children's Villages office over lunch as a "thank you" for your time.

About SOS Children's Villages USA, Inc.

Location:

1620 I Street NW, Suite 900, Washington, DC 20006, US

Mission Statement

The SOS Mission is as follows: To build families for children in need, to help children shape their own futures , and to share in the development of communities.

Description

Since its founding in 1949, SOS Children's Villages has expanded to over 500 villages in 135 countries. We are currently raising over 80,000 children in our villages and through our many education, family strengthening, medical, and outreach programs, we impact the lives of over 1 million people each year.

Children who have been abandoned or orphaned come to SOS Children's Villages where they are integrated into a loving family environment. They are nurtured and supported by an SOS Mother and up to 15 other children in their SOS home who become their SOS brothers and sisters. Strong bonds develop within these "SOS families", and even after the children are grown and leave the village, these family relationships endure.

While growing up, SOS children have the benefit of a stable, loving family environment that includes the necessities of life such as clothing, meals, medical care and a high-quality education. Children remain in their SOS home within an SOS Village until they are prepared to create lives for themselves as independent adults.

SOS Villages do not operate independently of their environment. Each SOS Village is a role model for the community in terms of quality care-giving, education, and health care and aims to be fully integrated into the larger community - not isolated from it. At SOS, we embrace and respect the local culture, wherever we operate, with the exception of situations that might violate human rights.
