We Need More Men Like You in Denver! If the graduation rate of male youth increased by 5%, the nation would gain $7.7 billion in crime related savings Supporting more than 1500 youth nationally in 2012 alone, Reach & Rise(tm) mentoring improves the futures of at risk youth by helping them to develop the key skills for success. Less than 34% of the mentors participating in our program are men and even less are men of color, leaving many boys without an example of a positive adult male in their lives. We need 20 additional men to serve as mentors for our young men. If you are over 23 years old, have two hours a week to spare, and like to have fun, you have what it takes to succeed in this program. We provide training and ongoing support throughout your mentoring relationship, so all you need to do is be you! Mentoring with Reach & Rise(tm) is simple: Weekly meetings with mentee Monthly check-ins We need your help-- become a Reach & Rise(tm) Mentor today!

Mission Statement

At the YMCA, we recognize that it takes a village to raise strong, confident children. To help make a positive difference in the lives of both parents and kids, the YMCA leads the free Reach & Rise Therapeutic Group Mentoring Program. Through this program, children and teens ages 8 to 15 take part in weekly group activities with other kids and with positive adult role models in a supportive and fun environment.

Description

In the program, two adult mentors are matched with a group of 6 youth mentees once a week for two hours. Mentors serve as role models, friends, and confidants - all an additional source of support for children.

Together, the groups meet at assigned sites, such as YMCA branches, schools, or community centers, and take part in sports, community service programs, and games. They also discuss and do role-playing about issues and events going on in their lives.

There are two program cycles: An 8-week session that meets in the summer, and a 16-week session that meets in the fall and spring. Mentors follow a YMCA group mentoring handbook, and the program director and families convene monthly to make sure each child’s goals are being met.
