Position Overview

BOOST (Best Out of School Time) is a program through Lutheran Children and Family Service that provides before and after school programs to over 900 youth at 11 schools in Southwest, West, North, and Northeast Philadelphia. An essential component of the BOOST program is clubs, which provide academic and social enrichment for students. The clubs are advertised as courses through "BOOST University", which are modeled off a college course catalogue. Students can select classes based on their interests such as, "Astronomy 101" or "Introduction to Spoken Word."

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach and lead a club for group of students to engage them in learning new skills and activities.
  • Motivate students to develop self-confidence and positive attitudes towards learning and themselves.
  • Regularly communicate with site coordinator and staff regarding student progress and issues that arise.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.

Impact on Organization

Volunteers will allow BOOST to provide a greater variety of extracurricular activities which may be otherwise unavailable to students. These clubs will allow students to discover their passions and engage in physically and mentally health lifestyles.

Training

All volunteers will receive an official volunteer orientation with Lutheran Children and Family Service in addition to an on-site training with the site coordinator.

Commitment

A minimum three month commitment is required. Volunteers must commit to at least two hours per week between the hours of 3:00 and 5:00 PM on Fridays.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a skill that can be used for a children’s club including but not limited to: dance (step, etc.), theater, chorus, art, spoken word, chess, robotics, Scrabble, debate, or yoga.
  • Previous experience working with children and youth, teaching experience is a plus
  • Comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ideal candidates will be energetic and committed

PA Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse clearances are required.
