Volunteers are needed in the Northern Virginia region to staff FREE tax preparation sites that will serve low-income families and help them receive needed refunds and tax credits. No experience necessary. All training provided. Tax preparers will be certified by the Internal Revenue Service and can be eligible to receive CE (Continuing Education) credits (if certain conditions are met).

Volunteers are needed to prepare tax returns, greet and screen visitors, and assist with language translation. Individuals or groups of volunteers are needed to assist with this worthwhile effort.

Tax filings are prepared online using IRS software especially developed for this initiative. Volunteers are needed from late January 2016 through April 20165. Training will begin December 2015 and go through January 2016. Sites are generally open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5 pm to 9 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am until 1 or 3 pm depending on location. Varieties of flexible schedules are available to volunteers and will meet their professional and personal lifestyles. Volunteers may serve as many hours as they wish.

Required skills:

Greeters/Screeners: A desire to help and a friendly personality.

Tax preparers: If you have completed your own taxes in the past, this opportunity may be perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Prior experience preparing taxes online is helpful but not required. Volunteers wishing to assist with tax preparation must be able to complete the IRS training and pass certification test at "Link & Learn" - for either Basic or Advanced certification. There will additional classroom training offered to tax preparing volunteers.
