Mission Statement

The Mission: To conserve and restore a healthy and productive Maunalua Bay through community kuleana.

The Vision: A Maunalua Bay where marine life is abundant, the water is clean and clear, and where people take kuleana in caring for the Bay.

Description

Mālama Maunalua (to care for Maunalua) is a community-based stewardship organization created to conserve and restore Maunalua Bay by informing, engaging and empowering community, and by forming strong partnerships with government and NGOs.

Mālama Maunalua began with a small hui of long-term residents of Maunalua Bay who shared a deep love of the region and concern about the steep decline in the health of this precious marine environment. Mālama Maunalua was formally launched in 2005, to be a coordinating body for current and future conservation projects at Maunalua Bay. in the fall of 2006, community members and conservation advisors met to produce a 3-year strategic action plan. After producing this first Conservation Action Plan, four working groups were formed to develop and implement detailed workplans for invasive alien algae removal: fishery/reef complex restoration, land-based pollution/watershed management, and community outreach and education. These working groups remain active to date.
