Men, Women, and lifeguards 19 years of age: WE WANT YOU!

Fall/Spring Family Weekend Volunteers (2.5 day weekend sessions at our camp site in Lake Hughes)

The Painted Turtle is currently accepting volunteer applications for our 2014 Spring Family Weekends.

  • Volunteer Pals: Family Weekends are an opportunity for campers and their families to enjoy a weekend together at The Painted Turtle. Volunteers play an important role during the weekends by helping families to experience all camp has to offer. Volunteers join us at camp from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon to work as Family Pals or Program Pals.
    • Family Pals are assigned to one or two families and act as their host at camp. They offer friendship, support, and an extra set of hands.
    • Program Pals are assigned to run a specific program area, such as Woodshop, Arts and Crafts, or Fishing and Boating. Program Pals facilitate fun and safety during activity sessions. They are also assigned to a family to offer support during meals and evening activities.
  • Lifeguard & Translators: The Painted Turtle is always looking for certified lifeguards and Spanish language interpreters to volunteer for all or part of a Family Weekend. Contact our Interim Volunteer Coordinator Megan Carroll at volunteer@thepaintedturtle.org for more information.

Summer Opportunities: Volunteer Cabin Counselors (6-7 day summer sessions at our camp site in Lake Hughes)

Volunteer Cabin Counselors join a cabin team during a summer session to care for, supervise and cheer on campers throughout their time at camp. They encourage friendships and teamwork within the cabin, role model camp spirit, and help campers to get the most out of their camp experience. Our medical team provides any needed medical support so counselors can focus on engaging campers in the activities. Volunteers live in the cabins with 8-10 campers and 3-4 adult counselors. As a volunteer, you’ll contribute to a team-oriented experience of leading your cabin, planning activities, and creating a lifetime of unforgettable memories.

Mission Statement

The Painted Turtle is a place where children with serious medical conditions can celebrate just being kids! Our nonprofit organization offers children with serious medical conditions and their families a unique camp experience designed to foster personal growth and exploration. Our goal is to empower campers--to make new friends, try new things, build self-confidence, and become more independent in their medical care. In short, we aspire to help our campers discover all that is possible in their lives.

There is no billing department at The Painted Turtle--campers and their families attend free of charge. And there’s no limit to the amount of laughter campers take home with them either!

Description

In 1999 Paul Newman and Page Adler, along with a group of other dedicated individuals, co-founded The Painted Turtle. Through the ongoing commitment of these individuals, many of whom sit on our board today, the dream of The Painted Turtle became a reality. Since opening in 2004, we have served thousands of campers and family members at our year-round camp programs. In September 2007, The Painted Turtle established its Outreach Program called The Painted Turtle Outpost, which brings the hopeful, playful spirit of camp to children at hospitals and community events. Along with Outpost, we have fall and spring family weekends, AND 8 week-long summer sessions which are divided up according to chronic illness.

Beyond the laughter and play volunteers bring to camp, the impact they make on our campers and families lasts long after they leave the gates of The Painted Turtle. Our volunteers often comment that camp deeply touches their own lives as well.
