Volunteers with the Visitor and School Engagement Department at the Great Lakes Science Center are trained to do the following tasks engaging the visitors in the museum’s galleries. These tasks are done in a rotation during the volunteer’s shift. Volunteers are required to work a minimum of one 4 hour shift per week for 3 month.
Group Greeting
Organized, friendly group greeters are essential to school group visits. Assisting students into the building, distributing wristbands, assisting teachers and giving directions ensure a seamless, comfortable visit for all age groups.
Exhibit Interpreter
Friendly, outgoing exhibit interpreters are an important part of the visitor experience in all the museum galleries like Bio Med Tech, NASA, Science Phenomena and the WM. G. Mather. Interacting with visitors of all ages, enhancing their understanding of concepts, and having fun, are what keep our visitors coming back. Also learn to use the Bridge of Fire, one of our signature exhibits, as a way to charge up our audience!
Polymer Fun House
The Polymer Fun House is looking for fun, patient, outgoing attendants. This high-energy play area is designed for children under age 7, with a ball pond, bounce house, dress up area, and more!
Mobile Explorers
Show off your fun side to visitors with our themed cart activities. Choose a cart activity that suits your style (NASA, DNA, Bubbles, Robotics, Light, Cryogenics, and many more). Mobile Explorers are a great way to get visitors excited about what they will see on the museum floors.
Special Exhibition Interpreter
Each season brings to the Science Center new and exciting traveling exhibitions. Use your expertise and passion to enhance the experience for each of our visitors. Interact with visitors within the exhibition, answer questions and conduct hands-on activities. LEGO Travel Adventure closes October 11, 2014 and Mythbusters: the Explosive Exhibition ™ opens February 7, 2015
Science Demonstrations
Calling all showmen/women! Assist our staff with the many high energy demonstrations for school groups and the public. Learn how to use the Van de Graaff generator in the Electricity demonstration! Be prepared for excitement and fun!
Mather Facilitator
Learn the facts about the Great Lakes! A story of history, technology and innovation plus the importance of the Mather and similar ships to the development of great industries which built Cleveland and the nation (seasonal hours May-October)

Mission Statement
Our mission is simple: to make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) come alive. The Science Center envisions a community where all people value science, technology, engineering and math to inform decision-making and enrich lives.
Description
Great Lakes Science Center, home of the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, makes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) come alive for more than 300,000 visitors a year through hundreds of hands-on exhibits, temporary exhibitions, the Cleveland Clinic DOME Theater, historic Steamship William G. Mather, daily science demonstrations, seasonal camps, and more. The Science Center is funded in part by the citizens of Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture. Visit GreatScience.com for more information.
Volunteers are an integral part of our workshops, science shows, special events and the overall welcoming atmosphere of fun and curiosity cultivated by the Science Center. Volunteers assist our guest engagement staff, man our information desk, lead tours aboard the historic Steamship William G. Mather and so much more. Our Volunteers enjoy bringing our exhibits to life with additional information and new ways to interact with and learn from them. Creating amazing stories for our visitors through answering questions, one-on-one interaction, and mind-blowing science demonstrations ensures that both the volunteer's, and the guest's, experience is a memorable one.
