Position Overview

The Philadelphia Refugee Mental Health Collaborative (PRMHC) is a group of resettlement agencies, mental health providers, physicians and arts organizations working to link refugees to culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health care. The PRMHC is led by Lutheran Children and Family Service and uses a multidisciplinary, trauma-informed approach to help families process past exposure to violence and current resettlement stress through therapy, support groups and community-building arts projects. Volunteers are needed to provide homework help to Burmese and Bhutanese refugee children and youth. Homework help takes place at 2106 South 8th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide homework assistance individually and in small groups to after school participants in a safe and caring environment.
  • Motivate students to develop successful study habits and positive attitudes toward learning and themselves.
  • Regularly communicate with staff regarding student progress and issues that arise.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for students.

Impact on Organization

Volunteers will provide more individualized attention to students which promotes academic success for the students and fosters stronger relationships between volunteers and students.

Training

All volunteers will receive an official volunteer orientation with Lutheran Children and Family Service in addition to an on-site training with the site coordinator.

Commitment

A six month commitment is preferred but a three month commitment will be considered for students. Volunteers must commit to at least one and a half hours per week between the hours of 3:30PM and 5PM on Monday and/or Wednesday.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates the following characteristics: flexibility, cultural competency, and relationship building
  • Previous experience working with children and youth, tutoring experience is a plus
  • Ability to commit and consistently come to form relationships with youth

PA Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse clearances are required.
