Position Overview

The Lutheran Children and Family Service Refugee Resettlement Program is a local affiliate of the National Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, which assists refugees and asylees through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of State. When a refugee family arrives to the area, Lutheran Children and Family Service is responsible for gathering available resources, finding housing and employment, and providing general cultural orientation. Our refugee resettlement services are designed to create a smooth transition to life in the local community and to promote economic self-sufficiency. Volunteers are needed to set up refugee houses and apartments with furniture and household items before their arrival. This volunteer position is ideal for a group of volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up houses/apartments with all household essentials before refugees arrive
  • Move and arrange furniture to create a comfortable and welcoming living environment

Impact on Organization

Volunteers will support refugee families by helping them transition to living in the U.S by ensuring they have all basic essentials and a space to start rebuilding their new lives in the U.S.

Training

All volunteers will receive an official volunteer orientation with Lutheran Children and Family Service in addition to an on-site training with the site coordinator.

Commitment

Volunteers must commit to at least one to three hours per month on an as needed basis. Groups may be needed on short notice to mobilize quickly to prepare a house in time for a refugee family's arrival.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Valid driver's license with clean license check and own transportation is a plus for moving furniture but not required

Volunteers are likely to gain a sense of personal fulfillment from the positive impact they will have on refugee families by creating a safe place for them to call home.

PA Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse clearances are required.
