The English for Work ESL Tutoring program is an adult literacy program tailored specifically to the individual professional goals and needs of each adult student. We are looking for tutors who have a bachelor's degree and experience in the workforce; full-time experience or experience in the service industry is a plus! The lessons will be written by the class intern, who will conduct research on the fields of each of the students in order to write good lessons for you to work on each week.

Tutors will help students work on the particular English skills they need to be successful in their current jobs, apply for new job, or enroll in a training program. Lessons will be specific to the student's field--in the past, students have worked on English for the mechanic trade, to be a dental assistant, to prepare for the Air Force exam, to work as a factory supervisor, and others. All tutoring is done in English so volunteers are not required to speak any other languages.

Requirements: Tutors for this program must have strong job searching skills and substantial, full-time experience in the work force. We require all volunteers to be reliable, responsible, mature, friendly, and patient. A semester-long commitment to the program is required: you must attend your "class" every week (no more than 3 absences) during the entire semester. Spring semester runs Jan 26-May 9.

  • Class is held 6:00-8:00pm Monday nights at Bethel Lutheran Church (312 Wisconsin Ave)

IMPORTANT: In order to be considered for this program you are required to submit your resume as well as a Volunteer Tutor Application. Please also note this program is located far from downtown and reliable transportation is needed.

New tutors accepted into this program are required to attend Orientation/Training:

  1. Orientation: 6:00-7:00pm Monday January 19
  2. Training: 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday January 20 OR Wednesday January 21 (you choose which)
