Greater Birmingham Humane Society is looking for volunteers to assist on a weekly basis with Nosework training for our shelter dogs, every TUESDAY NIGHT FROM 5:30 - 7:00 pm.
The goal of the K9 Nose Work Shelter Program is to use a dog's natural skills to hunt as an enrichment tool. In shelters often times space and resources are limited. The need for low cost and effective activities for the dogs beco mes invaluable. K9 Nose Work satisfies the need for shelters to provide mental stimulation for the dogs, while keeping costs down.
There are many benefits to fun scent work:
• Outlet for the drive to hunt
• Provides Mental and Physical energy burn
• Builds confidence in shy dogs
• It’s Fun for the dog and the volunteers!
Dogs of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds can begin K9NW™! The K9 Nose Work Shelter Program is designed much like a game, enabling the dogs to utilize their hunt drive to search for treats (or toy) in an assortment of boxes. Self-rewarding, the search for more treats in other boxes increases the hunt drive, keeps the dogs thinking, and builds a dog's confidence that they can have some control over their environment.
The more volunteers we have participating in the program, the greater number of dogs we can reach during a training session.
The volunteers do not need any prior experience in training a dog. They only need to be comfortable walking the dogs on leash, and want to have fun!
