Life Skills Intern

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 21,000 refugees from nearly 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 800 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 1,500 refugees and asylees.

SCOPE OF LIFE SKILLS INTERN WORK: The Life Skills Intern serves in the Education department, and coordinates weekly workshops for newly arrived clients. These workshops focus on equipping clients with knowledge to succeed in the U.S. around topics such as financial literacy, dental hygiene, fire safety, and bike safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a database of contacts and resources to plan and implement workshops and educational activities
  • Coordinate workshops and educational activities for refugee clients
  • Participate in the organization, marketing and implementation of workshops
  • Develop a calendar of workshops and other special programming for refugee clients
  • Develop a contact list of translators and interpreters who can speak Arabic, Burmese, French, Somali, Spanish, Swahili and Nepali

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Develop community partnership skills in conducting outreach for potential partners
  • Gain experience and skill in instructing and developing life skills workshop material appropriate to newly arrived refugees’ needs and barriers
  • Combine macro-practice and micro-practice in facilitating workshops and providing administrative support to Adult Education Coordinator

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proven excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Strong research and organizational skills
  • Strong MS office Suite and internet skills
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Must be comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment; international experience a plus
  • Must be creative and have strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be available to hold seminars on Friday mornings from 9:30-11:30am and be available for at least three months

Internship Deadlines: Spring Dec 15, Summer Apr15, Fall July 15.
