More likely to drop out of high school. More likely to become pregnant as a teenager. Less likely to find a "career" position in adulthood. More likely to be homeless. These are just a few of the grim situations that children may face later in life after having been habitually truant. YOU have the opportunity to help them change that path. What do Special Truancy Advocates do? Special Truancy Advocates, or "STAs," listen. Then they act. Advocates get to know the child by talking with everyone in that child’s life: teachers, parents, school personnel and others. Through this, they work to identify barriers to each student’s educational success. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs. Who can be a Special Truancy Advocate? We welcome people from all walks of life. Our Special Truancy Advocates have varied background, are retired and mid-career, are parents and non-parents, are from Boulder and Longmont. They are diverse! We are looking for people who care about children and their education, can apply common sense to difficult situations and who can work in a team-based approach. As a Special Truancy Advocate, you will receive thorough training and on-going support from professional staff to coach you through each case that you serve. STAs pass background checks, participate in a pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed. Contact us for more information on upcoming trainings and information sessions.
