Clean for a Couple Living with Disabilities

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: The ALS Association: MN/ND/SD

  • 1 person is interested

A couple in Champlin is looking for someone clean - dust, vacuum, and clean the bathroom - their house every other week. They each have a medical condition that causes muscle weakness leaving them physical unable to clean. Whoever cleans for them will be giving them the gift of a clean home in which to spend their time.

If you have some spare time and think you could help this couple or another family in your area, we’d like to hear from you. Please contact Laura Winterstein, volunteer coordinator, at 888-672-0484 or laura@alsmn.org.

What is ALS?
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system. ALS results in gradual, progressive muscle weakness and often leads to paralysis. At this time there is no known cause or cure for ALS.

Why does the program exist?
Living with ALS makes daily tasks more challenging. The family assistance program matches trained volunteers with people living with ALS and their families to assist with tasks or to be a friendly visitor. If you have just seven minutes, watch this video explaining the program.

How does the program work?
To join the program as a volunteer you will need to complete a volunteer application, do an interview with the volunteer coordinator, have a satisfactory background check, and participate in an orientation to The ALS Association and the family assistance program.

Why should you volunteer?
By volunteering for a family affected by ALS, you will decrease stress, increase the quality of life for the person living with ALS, and make life a little easier for the whole family.
