Transitional Housing Corporation (THC) is seeking enthusiastic, knowledgeable and flexible volunteers to tutor children and adults living in our continuum of housing.

Our youth are typically between the ages of 5-11. Our tutoring program is designed to meet the challenges of youth academically by providing onsite homework assistance and to deepen writing, reading comprehension and mathematical skills.

The adults in our program are seeking help in various areas, including GED prep, A+ Certification and English language classes. Bilingual volunteers in either French or Spanish are needed.

THC is a non-profit organization that provides housing and supportive services, including case management, employment and career development, life and parenting skills, and youth enrichment services to more than 600 homeless and at-risk families in DC so that they can make transformational changes in their lives.

Requirements:

  • Time Commitment: 1-2 days per week for 2 hours per session; typically one weekday evening for the entire duration of the school year (September-June)
  • Enthusiasm and energy
  • Comfort with a variety of elementary and middle school subjects
  • Experience working with children
  • Willing to manage a group of youth
  • Background in education or child development a plus
  • Interest in serving low-income and homeless populations
  • Volunteers must pass a background check prior to serving
  • Must attend a new volunteer training

Description

Housing Up is a non-profit organization that provides housing and supportive services to homeless and at-risk families so that they can make transformational changes in their lives.

Housing Up’s resident services team provides programming in five categories: Health and Wellness, Employment, Community Building, Tenant Education and Youth Enrichment. Our resident services manager and coordinators work on-site at our properties to implement programming and services such as tutoring, one-on-one mentoring for education and career development, college application assistance, community gardens, HIV screenings, community events for the holidays, and special classes, like yoga and cooking, taught by qualified volunteers. Our youth enrichment services include a weekly tutoring program, character development, arts education and computer literacy. These services give children and young adults a greater chance of success in high school and college. The goal of the program is to increase the independence and stability of the families we serve.
