What is this Volunteer Opportunity?

We are looking for leaders willing to help organize established Affiliate group events, build membership, create community, and support and advocate for local military servicemembers as needed. Military members, veterans, or family of servicemembers are preferred, but service or connection to the service is not a requirement to volunteer.

What is MAAF?

The Military Association of Atheists & Freethinkers is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a supportive community for nontheistic service members, to educate military leaders about nontheism, and to resolve insensitive practices that illegally promote religion or unethically discriminate against nontheism.

MAAF is dedicated to building community for atheists and humanists in the military. MAAF connects military members from around the world with each other and with local organizations. In addition to our community services, we take action to educate and train both the military and civilian community about atheism in the military and issues that face us. Where necessary, MAAF identifies, examines, and responds to insensitive practices that illegally promote religion over non-religion within the military or unethically discriminate against minority religions or differing beliefs.

MAAF National is located in Alexandria, VA, but we have Affiliate groups across the country, and several overseas. We are bringing military members together to socialize with and support one another on military installations, ships, planes, and across units.

A MAAF Affiliate Coordinator will:

Actively participate in planning and implementing local meetings, social events, special events, and conferences. Examples of special events are rallies, tabling, concerts, lobbying, parade marching groups or floats, fundraisers, guest speakers, training events, etc to promote and support your Affiliate group. Participate in National campaigns on a local level for recognized days of celebration (National Day of Reason, Ask an Atheist Day).

Stay educated on current military issues in general and in relation to: atheism, humanism, and other nontheist lifestyles and the issues, campaigns, and current events associated therein.

Inform MAAF National of successes, lessons learned, organization updates, membership needs, fundraising, special events, and all other relevant information associated with being an Affiliate group.

Communicate monthly any successful organizing for your Affiliate group, as well as advise MAAF National of any problems you or your groups may face.

Increase local membership by actively advertising your Affiliate group, communicate with the local chaplaincy office, the command as needed, and any third party organizations with similar missions or constituency.

Provide support and resources to other members, atheists, and freethinkers, through regular meeting dates/times/locations and continually evaluate how to maximize effectiveness within resources

Identify areas of improvement within your Affiliate group, and collaborate with other local members to meet and exceed the needs and successes of the group.

Protect MAAF service marks and image by agreeing to MAAF licensing agreements and operational oversight.

Key responsibilities include:

-Organizing, holding, and advertising bi-monthly meetings

-Organizing special events semi-regularly

-Maintain Affiliate group social media or website

-Representing MAAF Affiliate group as necessary to the public, and acting as Public Point of Contact for MAAF National within your local area
