The Eviction Defense Collaborative is the principal organization in San Francisco helping low-income tenants respond to eviction lawsuits.The Rental Assistance Disbursement Component (RADCo) department provides interest-free loans and grants to tenants residing in the City and County of San Francisco who have fallen behind in their rent due to a temporary financial setback. Each year we provide emergency legal services and rental assistance to more than 5,000 tenants in the city.

Volunteer opportunities are available in both the legal eviction defense department or the rental assistance department. Law clerk positions are 12+ hours a week and rental assistance coordinator positions are 16+ hours a week for a 2-3 month commitment.

Law clerks:
Under the supervision of an EDC staff attorney, Law Clerks directly counsel tenants facing eviction and prepare paperwork for them to file in court.

EDC strives to create a law clerk team that reflects the diversity of the tenant community we serve. People of color, immigrants, women, and LGBTQ people are strongly encouraged to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Counsel and conduct intake interviews with tenants facing eviction.
  • Legal writing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Rental assistance coordinator
The Rental Assistance Disbursement Component (RADCo) department provides interest-free loans and grants to tenants residing in the City and County of San Francisco who have fallen behind in their rent due to a temporary financial setback.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interview and counsel clients facing eviction for nonpayment
  • Screen clients to determine eligibility for rental assistance
  • Prepare for and assist in court-mandated settlement conferences
  • Work one-on-one with clients to manage their finances by creating budgets
  • Negotiate payment plans with landlords
  • Send out checks to pay off back rent owed in order to keep clients in their homes
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications for both departments:

  • Fluency in Spanish or Chinese strongly preferred
  • Strong commitment to social & economic justice
  • Sensitivity in working with clients from a diverse background.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills.
  • ability to work in a busy clinic environment.
  • Support of the mission of the Eviction Defense Collaborative.

Legal Assistance

The EDC provides legal assistance to people who are in legal proceedings for eviction in San Francisco.

Rental Assistance

If you are behind in your rent, you may be able to avoid having an eviction filed against you.
