Help highly motivated adults fulfill a dream to learn to read!

Volunteer tutors serve hundreds of students each year through Literacy Action of Central Arkansas. This program matches one adult tutor with one adult student. Volunteers may choose to work either with an adult who needs literacy instruction or with non-native adults who want to learn to read and speak English. The different needs and objectives of individual students are carefully matched with the strengths and experience of particular tutors.

Tutors work one-on-one with students in a public setting. We provide tutor training and all materials necessary to work with the student. We conduct the tutor training session at our classroom in the main CALS library in downtown Little Rock. You may register for any tutor training workshop on our website www.literacylittlerock.org.

Make a difference in a family's life - learning to read helps parents read to their children and ESL students to communicate with their children's teachers; it helps adults get jobs with family sustaining salaries; and it gives native and non-native English speakers dignity and the ability to talk with health care professionals, fill out an application, or simply go grocery shopping!(ABL/ESL)

We also need tutors for adults with high school diplomas/GED's who want to return to school to earn a post-secondary degree or certificate. We offer an intensive, 8-week Reading/Writing course in cooperation with Pulaski Tech College in North Little Rock. Our tutors meet with students in the program for two 1-hour sessions each week for seven weeks. We will train you and provide all of the materials you need to help our highly motivated students reach their goal of entering college. You can make a difference in someone's life.(TAFF)

Mission Statement

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that teaches reading skills to adults and English language skills to non-native adults. We strive to build a community of adults empowered through literacy.

Description

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas, founded in 1986, provides one-on-one tutoring for adults whose needs are not served by traditional classroom adult education programs in the Little Rock area. Over the years, the organization has recruited and trained hundreds of community volunteers who have taught thousands of adults to read. In 1999, the program expanded to offer tutoring to immigrants who wished to improve their English skills. Today, there are adult students from countries around the world who work with tutors to learn English and to use their new skills to fully participate in community life.

Tutors and their students meet together for about three hours per week in public places throughout the Little Rock and Conway areas. Instruction is tailored to the literacy skills and learning objectives of each student. Tutors work with students on practical applications of their new skills so that students see the benefits of their efforts right away. Learning to read or speak English is hard work, but most students see significant progress in the first twelve months of instruction.

All services are offered free of charge. The program depends on the efforts of volunteers who give thousands of hours each year and on the financial support of individuals and organizations who realize the importance of addressing the tough issues of literacy.

Literacy Action of Central Arkansas is a member of the Arkansas Literacy Councils, Inc., an a affiliate of Proliteracy America and a designated agency of the United Way.
