Roots and Troops is a pilot program. It's objective is to place military veterans into school gardens. Each school garden has a team that is tasked with maintaining the garden so that teachers can teach, students can learn, and the garden can grow. The team is staffed by school administrators, faculty, students, parents, and members of the community. This program places military veterans on a team at a school located in the Reno area. In return for their efforts, veterans receive: garden therapy, training, garden knowledge, an avenue for youth to appreciate veterans, and an opportunity to positively and directly contribute to their community.

Urban Roots is founded on the idea that food is a powerful tool for academic and sustainable agriculture instruction. In order to realize our mission of growing healthy minds, bodies, and communities, we provide school and farm-based opportunities for teachers, students, families, and future farmers. Urban Roots is a part of a larger movement in northern Nevada to make the place we live abundant with healthy food, rich soil, and deep relationships with each other and the land.
