Work Plan for October 11, 2014 Trail Day

Our Trail Day plan includes registrations at both the Old 41 overflow parking lot and the Cheatham Hill Road grass field (across form the paved parking area). Volunteers registering at the overflow lot will be directed to the Cheatham Hill Road field.

The plan is to work on the Ward Creek Turnpike. After our construction in this area a couple of years ago, it's now time to make improvements. The sides need reinforcement and the drainage areas need cleaning. We'll also add fill dirt and wood chips as needed. We'll pull out the old wooden beamed bridge and cut it up for disposal. There is plenty of other work needed in this area such as pruning, cleaning out grade dips ... and general trail maintenance.

We're planning a staggered start by getting those who check in at Cheatham Hill Road away to work early and then phasing in those from the Old 41 check-in location as they arrive. We'll have a wonderfully interesting Trail Day!

We're using VolunteerSpot (the leading online signup and reminder tool) to organize our upcoming activity.

Description

The Kennesaw MountainTrail Club (KEMOTrail Corps, Inc.) was formed in the fall of 2002 as an in-kind service organization (i.e. all contributions would be in the form of volunteer work on the 20+ miles of trails in the 2,914 acre Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, a unit of the Department of the Interior National Park Service. The club is a Georgia Non-Profit corporation and an IRS 501 (C)(3) tax exempt entity.

Since its founding the club has donated thousands of hours of service to the park, and participated in several National Park Service Challenge Grants and other corporate and foundation grants for projects that benefit the park and the surrounding community.

The two main support functions of KMTC are The Trail Crew, and The Trail Ambassadors. The trail crew are trained and qualified in current best practices for building and maintaining trails, and in leading parties of volunteers with varying skills to perform and complete many projects in the park.

Trail Ambassadors assist the Park Service and Visitors in a variety of ways by patroling the trails, acting as guides and providing information to visitors, serving as observers to assist the park staff with identifying safety, and maintainence, and in any way they can to help ensure that ALL visitors to KEMO have a safe, enjoyable, and educational experience.

As of Spring 2012, KMTC has no paid staff, and maintains no offices or facilities. with few exceptions for operational expenses (i.e. Insurance, office supplies, regulatory fees) all donations received are applied directly to supporting the projects and services of the park.
